Problems are great

What Joachim Fiedler tells pupils about inventing

What do a combine harvester, a slice of bread and jam, a cello bow and a magnetic fastener have in common?
They show how an idea can come about.

Joachim Fiedler, the inventor and founder of FIDLOCK, has been exploring this question for many years. And he shares his experiences: in school talks, he speaks to pupils about how inventions come about, why problems can be a good starting point, and what it means to pursue an idea.

An idea doesn’t have to be perfect

As a child, Joachim drew a combine harvester that harvested grain at the front and dispensed jam sandwiches at the back. It was never actually built. Nevertheless, the idea was important.

Because that is precisely what his talks are all about: inventiveness begins with curiosity.

With questions. With the courage to think differently.

What if?
This question could be the start of something new.

From Problem to Invention
Drawing on his own experiences, Joachim shows how an idea can become a technical invention. It’s not just about the result. It’s about the journey: trying things out, making changes, failing, and starting over. The topic of patents is also part of this. Together with the European Patent Office (EPO), he helps students understand what a patent actually protects, when an idea becomes an invention, and what role intellectual property plays in innovation.

Hands-on invention
But it doesn’t stop at theory. Joachim shares examples from his work as an inventor and shows how concrete solutions emerge from unusual questions. In this way, an abstract topic becomes something that pupils can discover for themselves. After all, the next big idea might well lie in a problem that nobody has yet solved.

Inventive spirit begins at school
Through his school talks, Joachim Fiedler aims to encourage young people to ask questions, pursue their own ideas and remain curious. Together with the EPO, he offers an insight into the world of inventions and patents – and shows that innovation doesn’t just begin in the development office. Sometimes it starts quite simply with:

What if?
